At THE ROAD HOME™ LAW, we are committed to providing exceptional post-conviction legal services for individuals whose freedom rests with the California Board of Parole Hearings (BPH).
We specialize in thoroughly preparing clients for and representing them at live parole suitability hearings before the California Board of Parole Hearings (the Board or BPH). With our combined multi-decade expertise, we apply an intensive and comprehensive method that gives clients the best chance of success.
Our approach incorporates the Board’s Structured Decision Making Framework (SDMF). During every BPH proceeding, we passionately advocate for our clients’ fundamental rights and strive to uphold fairness and equity in the hearing process.
These services are available to clients who meet at least one of the following criteria: individuals serving at least one life sentence with the possibility of parole, those serving a life sentence for a nonviolent offense, individuals eligible for Elderly Parole Hearings or Youth Offender Parole Hearings, and those scheduled for a rescission hearing or parole reconsideration hearing.
New clients receive THE ROAD HOME™ LAW BPH Hearing Client Manual & Road Map. Written by Susan L. Jordan, the firm’s founder and attorney, this 100+ page manual complements each confidential, one-on-one attorney-client legal visit, offering seamless guidance throughout the parole hearing preparation process.
The Manual & Road Map includes various resources such as 15 Writing Assignments which align with the Board’s Structured Decision Making Framework (SDMF), the issues and topics the Board and the Forensic Assessment Division (FAD) clinician will discuss with the client, and templates for drafting each assignment. It assists clients every step of the way.

When representation begins, the client receives four BPH Hearing Timelines. Each timeline provides an overview of important events and deadlines for the Board and the Board’s Forensic Assessment Division (FAD), client writing assignments, and anticipated legal visiting dates.
These timelines remove any uncertainty, allowing clients to understand exactly what is required of them and what their legal team is doing at each stage of the representation.

In advance of one-on-one confidential attorney-client legal visits, THE ROAD HOME™ LAW team reviews and provides written feedback on client writing assignments.
We give clients ample guidance to create thoughtful and meaningful written documents the Board wants and expects to see, each one advancing the client’s case for parole suitability.
Clients work directly with each member of our team at all phases of the representation, benefitting from our legal and lived experience.
Clients meet with our team members in multiple, 90-minute confidential attorney-client legal visits. At each meeting, we guide clients in gaining deeper awareness and understanding of the critical issues and topics they must discuss with the Board and FAD clinician.
Our goal is to provide legal representation for BPH hearings that meets the needs of every client, regardless of criminal case factors and financial circumstances.
To achieve this goal, we offer four service levels. Each level includes an impressive, unparalleled set of legal services specialized to this unique area of the law.

THE ROAD HOME™ LAW is the vision and life’s mission of its founder Susan L. Jordan, Attorney at Law. Susan’s passion for guiding prisoners through the parole process began in the late 1990s as a prison education volunteer and prisoner rights advocate. In the early 2000s, with a family member serving a life sentence and another in the Pelican Bay State Prison SHU, Susan went to law school for the express purpose of representing prisoners.
Within a year of entering law school, Susan began her multi-decade career of providing exceptional legal services to the underserved California prison population, focusing exclusively on hearing representation before the Board of Parole Hearings (BPH), habeas petitions, and appellate law. Over the past two decades, Susan’s relentless efforts have secured the fundamental rights and freedoms of California’s incarcerated population. Known for her intensely thorough and singular approach to post-conviction law, Susan has undeniably made a lasting impact in this field.
Before obtaining her law degree, Susan served as the Director of Business Development & Client Services for a San Francisco-based commercial design firm, and later as an Executive Account Manager for a Silicon Valley hi-tech company. Susan received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and her law degree from the University of California, Davis School of Law (UCD SOL).

If it wasn’t for the hard work THE ROAD HOME™ LAW invested in me, their level of integrity, honesty, diligence, and compassion at every step of the board process, I wouldn’t be writing these words as a free man today. Susan dissected everything about my crime, my prison program, and my psych evaluation with so much patience, understanding, and care.
I highly recommend Susan and Steve to anyone who has a board hearing coming up. This is the team you need to usher you on your journey home.
Susan Jordan made the impossible possible. After 40 years of incarceration, our brother is free and it is all thanks to Susan. Our brother’s case was high-profile and involved unusual circumstances. Susan’s commitment, dedication, and steadfast desire to persevere for her clients is remarkable.
We know how crucial it is to have a parole expert and not just any attorney. Susan proved her value as an expert in this field. We recommend her to anyone seeking a chance at freedom.
THE ROAD HOME™ LAW is professional, compassionate, caring, and personable. Susan and Steve took me to the root of my defects which brought about deep insight, honesty, and the cry and hug I so desperately needed.
THE ROAD HOME™ LAW is in a class by itself! They will work hard for you, never give up on you, and will go above and beyond for you! How much is your freedom worth? Want the best in the state? THE ROAD HOME™ LAW is unlike any other. Nothing else needs to be said.
Our experience with Susan Jordan was completely different than any other attorney. Not only does Susan have true integrity, she did exactly what she said she would do. Had it not been for Susan’s tenacity and dedication, our son would not be home today. Her expertise in complicated and sensitive cases is without equal.
This woman knows what she is doing! Finally, a lawyer I still like after the case is over. I would hire Susan again in a heartbeat. .
THE ROAD HOME™ LAW is not the typical lawyer/client relationship. It’s a complete program that prepares you for the Board. I truly learned a great deal from both Susan and Steve and am thankful and extremely grateful for all their efforts!
I have recommended this firm from the beginning and continue to do so. Susan and Steve are hard-working, faithful, and very skilled at what they do. I can guarantee they will benefit your life whether you are found suitable or not.
I hired a powerhouse attorney. Ms. Jordan has experience working on sensitive crimes without judgment. The one-on-one work I did with her was invaluable. She knows what the BPH is listening to and looking for. She puts in the time, effort, and resources a client needs to succeed at their parole hearing.
Ms. Jordan presented her closing argument with fervent passion, arguing facts and issues addressed during the hearing. She connects with her clients in ways other attorneys do not. Her compassion for her clients is remarkable.
As a former lifer with a very sensitive case, I was facing a tough road to be found suitable for parole. I went through several consultations with lawyers, but none had the experience Susan brought to the table. Furthermore, Susan knows what the Board looks for and expects to grant parole.
Without Susan guiding me through this extremely complicated process, I would not be celebrating my freedom today. I consider Susan more than a lawyer; she is my friend.
Because of my crime, for a lot of years I was hopeless I would never get out. I was very lucky we found Susan. It was clear I could trust her and she knew exactly what she was doing. I did what she told me and I got a date from the Board. That was one of the biggest shocks of my life.
There is no better lawyer. I have no doubt without Susan I would not have gotten out. For those who want an attorney who cares about them and can get them out, it’s Susan.
The name THE ROAD HOME™ LAW carries profound significance for Susan L. Jordan, the firm’s founder. Derived from the painting The Road Home by Benjamin Ballard, a former life-term prisoner, it symbolizes every prisoner’s longing to return home.
But it also represents the journey we all face to find our inner home. This powerful artwork is the perfect origin for our name and brand, reflecting our unwavering commitment to guiding each client to achieve physical and inner freedom.
Since ancient times, cultures worldwide have recognized the crane as a sacred symbol of honor, vigilance, dignity, peace, and wisdom. Cranes carry deep, spiritual significance. They are messengers between the divine realm and humans. One who encounters a crane is the recipient of divine spiritual guidance and is being asked to look inward.
We selected the crane as our symbol because it embodies what we aim to offer and inspire in our clients on their journey home. We firmly believe that true freedom entails deep introspection, a willingness to break free from perceived obstacles, and a balanced approach of logic, legal expertise, creativity, and intuition.
Our guidance empowers clients to uncover their personal truth, break free from their past incarceration, and envision a compelling future.
Like the crane, we lead clients to realize their potential and achieve transformative freedom.
We accept GTL calls from all
