BPH Parole Suitability Hearings

We specialize in thoroughly preparing clients for and representing them at live parole suitability hearings before the California Board of Parole Hearings (the Board or BPH). With our combined multi-decade expertise, we apply an intensive and comprehensive method that gives clients the best chance of success. Our approach incorporates the Board’s Structured Decision Making Framework (SDMF). During every BPH proceeding, we passionately advocate for our clients’ fundamental rights and strive to uphold fairness and equity in the hearing process.

These services are available to clients who meet at least one of the following criteria: individuals serving at least one life sentence with the possibility of parole, those serving a life sentence for a nonviolent offense, individuals eligible for Elderly Parole Hearings or Youth Offender Parole Hearings, and those scheduled for a rescission hearing or parole reconsideration hearing.

THE ROAD HOME® LAW is the vision and life’s mission of its founder Susan L. Jordan, Attorney at Law. Susan’s passion for guiding prisoners through the parole process began in the late 1990s as a prison education volunteer and prisoner rights advocate. In the early 2000s, with a family member serving a life sentence and another in the Pelican Bay State Prison SHU, Susan went to law school for the express purpose of representing prisoners. Within a year of entering law school, Susan began her multi-decade career of providing exceptional legal services to the underserved California prison population, focusing exclusively on hearing representation before the Board of Parole Hearings (BPH), habeas petitions, and appellate law. Over the past two decades, Susan’s relentless efforts have secured the fundamental rights and freedoms of California’s incarcerated population. Known for her intensely thorough and singular approach to post-conviction law, Susan has undeniably made a lasting impact in this field. Before obtaining her law degree, Susan served as the Director of Business Development & Client Services for a San Francisco-based commercial design firm, and later as an Executive Account Manager for a Silicon Valley hi-tech company. Susan received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and her law degree from the University of California, Davis School of Law (UCD SOL). Stephen J. Schrader

Parole Release Specialist | Paralegal
Working alongside Susan is Stephen J. Schrader, THE ROAD HOME® LAW’s Parole Release Specialist | Paralegal. Steve served 24 years on a life sentence, appearing before the Board nine times. In 2018, Susan helped Steve secure a parole grant and his release from prison. Steve was paroled from the Correctional Training Facility (CTF) in October of 2018 and discharged from parole in 2021. During his time in prison, Steve earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management with a minor in Psychology. He is certified as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor II by Palo Verde College and as a Domestic Violence Facilitator by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Steve is also a Trained Facilitator for GOGI, PREP, the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), Criminal and Gang Members Anonymous (CGA), and Byron Katie’s The Work. Throughout his final 15 years in prison, Steve developed, participated in, and facilitated various self-help programs at CTF. Before joining THE ROAD HOME® LAW, Steve appeared as a background actor in numerous television series and movie productions. After leaving background acting, Steve worked for a national manufacturing sales representative firm. In 2022, Steve joined THE ROAD HOME® LAW and is currently fulfilling his aspiration to help others attain their freedom.

Rudy Carmona

Parole Release Specialist | Spanish Language Translator
In 2023, THE ROAD HOME® LAW was instrumental in helping Rudy obtain a parole grant at his initial hearing, leading to his successful release from prison that year. During his 25-year incarceration, Rudy earned an Associate of Arts in Sociology from Merced College. He became a certified Peer Support Specialist and a certified Substance Use Disorder Counselor. While at Valley State Prison, Rudy distinguished himself as the Lead Facilitator for the Youth Offender Program’s (YOP) Rehabilitative Community Classes (YORC). Applying his expertise in Motivational Interviewing, he effectively led impactful self-help groups and workshops for Criminals and Gang Members Anonymous (CGA), Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and Toastmasters International, reaching individuals in both English and Spanish. These programs addressed the root issues of criminality and victimization and cultivated emotional intelligence and self-awareness among participants. Now, as a valuable member of THE ROAD HOME® LAW team, Rudy harnesses his rich experiences and insights to empower incarcerated individuals and their families with essential bilingual support on their journey home. His deep commitment to uplifting those affected by childhood trauma and socioeconomic challenges is evident in his ongoing work counseling at-risk youth in Mexico’s rehabilitation centers and prisons. Rudy facilitates self-healing and inner transformation, proving that change is not only possible but achievable.

Derived from the painting The Road Home by Benjamin Ballard, a former life-term prisoner, it symbolizes every prisoner’s longing to return home. But it also represents the journey we all face to find our inner home. This powerful artwork is the perfect origin for our name and brand, reflecting our unwavering commitment to guiding each client to achieve physical and inner freedom.

Brand Identity

Since ancient times, cultures worldwide have recognized the crane as a sacred symbol of honor, vigilance, dignity, peace, and wisdom. Cranes carry deep, spiritual significance. They are messengers between the divine realm and humans. One who encounters a crane is the recipient of divine spiritual guidance and is being asked to look inward.

We selected the crane as our symbol because it embodies what we aim to offer and inspire in our clients on their journey home. We firmly believe that true freedom entails deep introspection, a willingness to break free from perceived obstacles, and a balanced approach of logic, legal expertise, creativity, and intuition.
